castel of lacoste luberonAn attractive Luberon village built on a green plateau looking out over the Aigues valley and facing Bonnieux. The village is dominated by its imposing medieval castle, remodelled during the sixteenth century, which played host on several occasions, from 1765, to Louis-Alphonse Donatien, the infamous Marquis de Sade. The French Revolution saw the castle vandalised and partly destroyed. There are magnificent views over the Mont Ventoux, the Monts du Vaucluse and the Luberon. The castle is lit up every night, offering a superb spectacle.

What to see and visit: the remains of the castle and ramparts, with its doors and towers: the clock tower, the doors of la Porte de la Garde, and of le Portail des Chèvres; the twelfth-century church of Sainte-Trophime, the nineteenth-century Temple, the old stone fountain and wash house.
